In this episode of North State Rocks, Perry sits down with Michael Kirack, who, at age 20, became the youngest licensed general contractor in California and has since built a thriving construction business spanning three decades in Susanville.

Starting with just $25,000 in credit against his truck and trailers, Kirack's journey exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the North State's economy.

"I wanted to be in the game," Kirack explained about his early decision to start his own business. "I wanted to make the money. If I'm doing the work, I wanted to reap the rewards."

His strategic approach to business diversity has been key to his longevity. With six different contractor licenses, Kirack Construction can handle everything from screen door installations to full subdivision development.

What sets Kirack's business apart is his emphasis on family and employee development. He currently has 28 full-time employees across four different crews, and many team members have been with the company since its inception.

"You're only as good as your employees," Kirack emphasized, noting that several family members, including his brother Darren, play crucial roles in the company's success.

The discussion reveals fascinating insights about navigating economic challenges, particularly during the 2008 recession. Kirack's cautious approach and diversified investment strategy proved crucial: "When you work hard for something, you don't want to lose it... I was making really good money, but I was not spending it. I was actually investing it and holding on to it. And that's what led me through the recession."

Beyond business, Kirack's deep commitment to community shines through. A 30-year member of both Rotary and Elks, he prioritizes giving back, especially to youth programs.

The conversation also highlights what makes the North State special: “We're living in God's country. We’ve got three lakes within a half hour. We’ve got the high mountain ranges... any hunting, I mean, you can hunt every species known to man here."

The episode is a powerful testament to how entrepreneurship, community involvement, and family values can create lasting success in the North State, even as rural communities face ongoing challenges. Kirack's story demonstrates that with the right approach to business diversity, strong community ties, and a commitment to quality of life, rural businesses can thrive for generations.
